Luton Bethlehem Peace Light 2024
All Saints Church, Shaftesbury Road, Luton LU4 8AH ·
Tuesday 17th December 2024 Time 7.30pm
The Peace Light will be welcomed at All Saints Church from Bethlehem.
Take the light on with you from this service to share its message of peace with as many people as possible.
The light has travelled from Bethlehem with the help of Scout and Guides throughout Europe
UK Scouts and Guides (and members of other Youth Organisations) have been involved with the Peace Light since it first came over to these shores, twenty plus years ago. Over more than 30 years members of individual countries Scout and Guide Associations, and other similar groups have acted as couriers, working in conjunction with the organisers “ORF”, taking back the Light to their own places of worship or meeting places.
Each year, the light is collected from a Service of Dedication in Vienna and then transported across Europe by representatives of the Associations. On its journey it is collected by other members of that countries Scouts and Guides to be distributed far and wide, delivering with it the Peace Lights dedication and message of goodwill.
This is an unusual multi faith service, open to all and with a strong emphasis on peace.
The flame is brought all the way from Bethlehem by Sea Scouts. It is brought into the church and passed from candle to candle amongst us.
Some churches and groups then carefully take their flame home to keep burning all through Christmas.
Traditionally the service has been richly supported by the scouting movement and we would love to see lots of scouts there again,
Details of how Scouts and Guides in other countries help distribute the Peace Light are shown on the Peacelight websites on the “Other Contacts” tab.
Jelly Babies were launched in 1918 in Sheffield, UK as “Peace Babies” to mark the end of World War I. Production was suspended during World War II due to wartime shortages and the fact that the name had largely become ironic.
In 1953 the product was relaunched as “Jelly Babies”. So why not as a “sign of peace” offer a “Peace Baby” when passing the Peace Light on.
