This story, about two Network Scouts, highlights the international challenges these 18-25 year olds  can face as part of the unit.

Two Bedford Network Scouts left rainy Bedford this July for a three week adventure in the Mongolian desert. Planned for almost two years, the action-packed trip took in the Chinese Terra Cotta army, a hike down part of the Great Wall of China, a train journey on the Trans Siberian Railway across the Gobi desert and two weeks living in makeshift yurt tents while looking after the feral street children of the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator.

Six foot six inch tall Ed Jenns, a Dane from Harrold, started planning the life changing adventure after a World Scout Jamboree. He was one of the pioneers of a 70-strong Three Nations team from around the UK who organised the trip to support the work of UNICEF in Mongolia.

His fellow explorer, Katy Eagle from Kempston, shared his enthusiasm but had to wait until three months ago for a last minute space. She brought hard-won overseas experience to the partnership. Just 18 months ago she started a two month’s work experience project as a care worker at a school in central India. She said, “The young children I cared for were so delightful I almost brought two home with me.”

They came back with countless tales of their adventures including sleeping out on the Great Wall of China and taking a zip wire high speed trip across a remote 300 foot ravine.

Scout Network is the fifth section of The Scout Associations youth programme and is for all young adults aged 18-25.

Scouting exists to make young people’s lives better, helping them realise their full potential and make an impact on their community. Scout Network enables this to happen through a programme of projects and events divided into three Programme Areas: Adventure, International and Community.

As a member of Scout Network you can expect to have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of exciting projects and events with 20,000 other 18 to 25 year olds across the UK. You will have the chance to get involved in a variety of activities and can earn virtual badges for your contribution.

Whilst participating in the Scout Network programme of projects and events you will build a great network of friends through working as part of a team. You’ll also learn invaluable life skills and have the opportunity to take the lead and build your leadership skills. No previous experience is necessary and it’s free to join.

Structure and Support

Scout Network is structured in a way that allows members to connect with other 18 to 25 year olds in their local area through the Scout District, supported by the Scout County.

The District Scout Network Commissioner, Assistant County Commissioner (Scout Network) and Programme Coordinators are roles available to support Scout Network members in creating, delivering and participating in the programme of projects and events. They are a great support through this website but also with regular face to face local meetings in your area, just another way to meet members and make friends.

Along with the local Scout Networks members can also take part in projects and events hosted by the UK Scout Network. All members of the Scout Network are members of the UK section and supported by the UK Scout Network Commissioners. You can follow them on twitter @ukscoutnetwork*
