Chosen for world class Icelandic trip
A Luton Scout Leader has been chosen to represent the UK at a global gathering in Iceland this summer.
Richard Baker from the Saxon Scout Group in Round Green, who will be going to the 15th World Scout Moot in July, has just attended the final training weekend to prepare him for the experience.
A Moot is a gathering for 18 to 25-year-olds from almost every continent on earth. It will see Richard go glacier walking, hiking, white water rafting and working with international patrols during the event that runs from 25th July to 2nd August.
The UK contingent will be taking over 500 Scouts and leaders to the event to meet up with 5,000 participants from 80 countries from around the world. They will join together to embark on nine days of adventure, challenge and discovery.
Richard and the other participants will stay at the National Scout Centre on the stunning banks of an Iceland lake. They will visit Geysir and the spectacular waterfalls of Gullfoss and make new friends from across the world.
Richard, who is representing Luton on the trip, said, “I am so looking forward to attending the World Scout Moot in Iceland this summer.
“Being involved in Scouting has given me many unique opportunities. I have done so many new things as a leader with the Saxon Group. If anyone is thinking about volunteering then I would say go for it.
“It opens up opportunities like this and helps me gain new skills and experiences. What I enjoy most is then being able to pass on these new skills to the Scouts back in Luton.”
Chief Scout Bear Grylls said, “I’d just like to say a massive good luck to our brilliant UK contingent. I am sure it’s going to be a trip to remember.
“I have filmed many times in Iceland and it’s an incredible place for adventure and to develop new skills that you can use throughout the rest of your life. It’s also a place that tests what you are made of!”
