Falkes Cub Scout Funday

Covid-Beating Falkes (Luton) Cub Scout Fun Day

Following more than 18 long, hard months without face-to-face Scouting, the young and ever-energetic Cub Scouts of Falkes District (Luton) came together for a day full of activities, learning skills they will hold onto for life. It was the Cubs’ first large gathering since before the COVID-19 pandemic, and both leaders and young people were ecstatic to be meeting in person. Fun was the order of the day as we said goodbye to video call meetups for good…

The weather made its best attempt to condemn us to a miserable day, but both young people and volunteers pushed through and made the most of their time together. The Cubs, aged between 8 and 10 ½, were entertained and challenged all day. They learnt essential first aid skills, tied knots and even fired crossbows – not to mention the large boardgames room! They also had a chance to gather round the campfire and sing some traditional songs. Verses of Alice the camel rang round the field regardless of the near-torrential downpour…

Despite unforeseen circumstances leading to a late change of venue, the leaders and planning team managed to turn it around with minimal effect on their delivery of an amazing event. Debbie, the organiser of this magnificent day said, ‘To see the team’s plans come to life was a great feeling. To turn it all around completely in a few days and see all the hard work really paid off. Judging by the happy faces that left at the end of the day – leaders included – it was a successful day’.

As a Cub Scout who attended the event, Callum told us ‘it is much better seeing everyone in person and getting to do the activities with other people’. Callum also told us that this was the first time he had cooked over ashes, and he loved it!

This year, we are moving and making great strides to increase our membership. Scouting is an inclusive organisation where everyone is welcome: all genders, races and backgrounds. Regardless of your child’s physical ability – there’s a Scout adventure out there waiting for them, and we’ll help them find it.

Put your phone down and what are you left with? Just teamwork, courage and the skills to succeed.’
