Groups of Falkes Scout District turn out to sail.

If you think Scouting is just about camping, compass and maps, thing again.

Forget the America Cup, Round the World Sailing, Formula One

Scouts, young boys and girls between 6 and 18 plus adult volunteers made boats not of wood or plastic but of cardboard boxes to hold between 1 and 4 scouts. One boat up to 12 thanks to Beech Hill and Saxon joining forces. They were encouraged to power the “boat” by paddles.

Each craft was paddle round a designated course in the fastest possible time.(Maybe!!!)
Such crafts were sailed at the Falkes Scout District Regatta at Boyds Field Scout Campsite near Henlow.

With smooth waters and stout hearts, these magical sailing boats took to the waters with a mixture of laughter and fun.

“I was rather pleased at how successful the Regatta proved to be. It was wonderful seeing how much fun everyone had making boats using materials you would not expect to float but did.” said Organiser Alan Burnham.

After he had finished laughing so much, Falkes (Luton) District Commissioner commented “Scouting is about providing exciting, adventures fun activities for our young people with adult volunteers support. This was in abundance today”

A final word on the cardboard box regatta. Folks, YOU ALL gave us a brilliant day. I saw Scouting at its shining best on Sunday. When something needed to be done, someone pitched in, when another group needed a hand, it was given, I heard tales of the preparation- the young people coming up with designs and choosing the best, then making it.
I saw bold young mariners putting to sea in sometimes somewhat dubious craft, determined their boat would work! The effort put into the boats was stunning!
I also saw Falkes as one District working together.

Thank you to everyone who took part in whatever way. Please also thank your young people. I guess it’s got to be “look out for cardboard box regatta take 2 coming to a lake near you next year”
