Luton Explorer Scouts climb to new heights
Luton Explorer Scouts are now at record levels according to new census figures just released.
These teenage Scouts have increased by 12% to 106 in the 2017 census. And the record was helped by a staggering 52% increase in Falkes District with the launch of a new Explorer Unit.
Explorer Scouts Jordan Timms (15) and her friend Chloe Bardy (14) from the new Hydra Unit used a climbing wall at TOKKO Youth Space in Gordon Street to demonstrate their record. They said, “We have a great time with all sorts of challenging things to do and enthusiastic leaders who are with us all the way.”
Explorer Scout Leader Nigel Timms added, “There’s a buzz in the headquarters when they arrive which is truly exciting. The guys decide their own programme and we just make it happen.
Chief Scout Bear Grylls said, “It’s great to see Scout numbers rising in Luton and clearly a big reason for this is the number of teenagers joining the adventure. More and more young people are realising that Scouting offers them so much – whether it’s the opportunity to go on a big international adventure, or take part in challenging activities or just the chance to learn and hone vital life skills.”
Total Scout membership in Luton is now 1411 up 4.9% on 2016 figures. There are 1001 Scouts in the town led by 410 volunteers. It’s a record last equalled at the turn of the century.
