Date: 8th Jun 2017 Author: Gerald Law
“Over 500 Scouts and friends came together on Dunstable Downs on Saturday to get an insight into the holy month of Ramadhan and to celebrate Iftar Under The Stars ”, said   event organiser Waqar Sheikh.

The Iftar Under The Stars event, overlooking Dunstable Gliding Club, sought to join every corner of the community together in the event. The organisers hosted activities such as bouncy castles, making and flying kites, archery with homemade bows and arrows alongside the breaking of fasting at sunset with beautiful food and prayers.

Iftar Under The Stars also sought to open people’s eyes to the world of Scouting. County Commissioner Bob Calver said, “It’s lovely to see such a beautiful place as Dunstable Downs hosting such a wonderful, diverse event, bringing the community together on a summer’s evening.”

He added, “It was a privilege to be with you this weekend joining hundreds of people from across communities. They were brought together by our shared values to celebrate and to learn about diverse cultures. It was very humbling.”

Waqa Sheikh, Group Scout Leader of Wardown Ninth Scout Group, was involved with organising the event alongside his friend Husman Khan from Beech Hill Scout Group. He said there were benefits for everyone who attended. He explained, “We planned this event to open up Scouting to our fellow Muslims, but also, to open the religion of Islam to the whole Scout Movement and other people from far and wide. What better way to celebrate Iftar than in the immense beauty God has created here on the Downs.”
