St Luke’s “The Great Bake Off Challenge”
Fun, Adventure, Experiences can come from many directions as was found at St. Luke’s Church recently when they challenged Adults and Young People to kick off their 2019 Extravaganza with the “Great Christmas Bake Off”. A mix of Can Cook, Can’t Cook, Should They Cook embraced all ages levels of ability.
For some, the activity started at home – or in the case of Lea Scout Group, their headquarters – baking cakes and cupcakes for the delight of all. Classic and modern recipes and designs. Leagrave Scout Group rose to the challenge despite being unable to access to their meeting hall at the last minute.
Adults, under 16’s, groups and clubs are asked to enter best tasting, best decorated cake and best tasting, best decorated cup cake with all categories being awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.
During the day, a number of stalls sold cards, cakes and decorations; and raffles, refreshments and more raised vital funds for the church. Tables were set up for more cake and biscuit decorating by all who cared to have a go.
The highlight of the day was the Stardust Theatre Company who performed beautifully at the bake-off, entertaining everyone and giving much pleasure and delight. The drama workshop group for adults and young people with learning disabilities within Luton held the attention and interest of visitors with a mixture of songs and signing.
The judging on the day was a very difficult task bravely led by the Luton Deputy Mayor, Councillor Maria Lovell. There were many winners from the congregation of St. Luke’s; Luton Scouts proudly took their place in the competition with some success. In the children’s individual categories, Hydra Explorer Scout, Faith, managed 1st place in the best-decorated and 3rd in the best-tasting class.
In the Group category, Lea Scout Group managed a win in the best decorated cake, Scout Leader Alison managed 2nd place, working with the St. Luke’s Care Hub.
Lea Scout Group also gained a 2nd place, and Leagrave Scout Group managed a commendable 3rd place in the best decorated cupcake despite last minute change of venue, proving Scouts overcome all difficulties!
Finishing off these pieces of food art by adults and young people made the presentations so much more special.
