Dunstable Downs – for kite flying and more

Stand on top of Dunstable Downs for a view that will simply take your breath away. These Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) are designated for the quality of their chalk grasslands.

As well as two Scheduled Ancient Monuments (Five Knolls and Medieval Rabbit Warrens) there are many other historical features and the site has much to offer you.

The chalk grasslands of the Downs have miles of footpaths and several circular walks, a fascinating history and an abundance of plants and wildlife.

Dunstable Downs is within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the highest point in Bedfordshire.

The wind-swept ridge provides ideal conditions for a variety of air sports, especially kite flying. On calmer days it’s the ideal site to enjoy the view and a picnic.

Here is what one enthusiastic reviewer had to say about the park:

One of Bedfordshire’s best kept secrets, Wrest Park is a beautiful large country house with outstanding gardens, stacked in history and just a few miles from Luton or Bedford..

Ideal for families as there is a free play area and restaurant for all to enjoy. The children also lose themselves is the acres of gardens, trees and outside buildings.

The house is full of activities and information showing how things were hundreds of years ago. Our children lost themselves and had a fantastic time.

We now visit 2 or 3 times a month and especially enjoyable during the summer and autumn months. There are free concerts and live music. Take a Sunday picnic and enjoy.

Ensure you join the national heritage to gain the best from this beautiful landmark. Have fun.’
