100 Scouts Compete for Shooting Award
Over 100 Luton Scouts and their leaders competed for the inaugural Alan Goodman memorial shooting award in a series of challenges at the weekend.
Young people, some as young as six, spent the day at a Bedfordshire camp site showing their archery and rifle shooting skills. They competed as teams to score the highest number of points in both disciplines and hoped to walk off with the Alan Goodman memorial flag. It was a nail biting contest with the scorers Mark Webb and Alan Burnham struggling with their calculators right to the end.
Scout Leader Debbie Burnham said, “It was amazing how Beavers as young as six coped with the physical demands of archery and the sharpshooting skills needed with a rifle.” Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts also took part in a series of demanding challenges.
With a score of 627 points, Strathmore & St Saviours Scout Group won the flag established in honour of Adam Goodman who died suddenly last year. They will carry it for the first time in a procession at the St George’s Day Parade in April.
Leagrave Scout Group came a close second with 603 points and third was Someries Hill Scout Group who scored 554 points.
District Commissioner Mark Webb said thank you to all the volunteers who made this event possible.
