Remembrance Sunday Service to be live streamed 8 November*

A short service will be live-streamed from 11am on Sunday 8 November and can be followed at www.luton.gov.uk/remembranceday.

Each year the council works closely with veterans of the Armed Services to ensure Luton participates in this nationally important commemoration. In line with government advice, a joint decision has been taken to honour armed service personnel in a manner that ensures the utmost safety for members of the public, serving members of the forces and veterans – many of whom are considered to be in especially vulnerable categories.

Councillor Tom Shaw, Armed Forces Champion, said: “Remembrance Sunday is a key event in the life of the nation and the town. It reminds us all of the sacrifices made by countless individuals and gives so many of us the opportunity to reflect with gratitude upon those, known and unknown, who have served and continue to serve us all.

“We are extremely disappointed that, due to the extreme dangers of the coronavirus pandemic, we will not be able to join together as we would normally like. Nevertheless by streaming the occasion online we hope as many people as possible will be able to safely participate in this important occasion.”

The Royal British Legion is encouraging people to watch events on television, online or to take part in a two-minute silence from their doorsteps at 11am on Sunday, November 8, 2020.

People are also encouraged to support the Royal British Legions 2020 Poppy Appeal “Every Poppy Counts”.

A number of places of worship in Luton will be holding their usual Remembrance Day services as permitted under government guidelines.

Any person or organisation wishing to lay a wreath at the war memorial is welcome to do so after 11.30am on the 8 November.
